呼应月度活动 /t/130 Show Your Test Bench(21 Oct – 20 Nov 2026)。

Weekly official topic (not an ad). Ties to the monthly event /t/130 Show Your Test Bench (21 Oct – 20 Nov 2026). We want real bench stories: the RF measurement mistake that cost you the most — calendar time, boards, customer trust, or a calibration standard.

Typical expensive failure modes: wrong calibration plane, cable/attenuator loss left out of the budget, RBW/detector choices that make a spur look legal, combiner isolation that paints instrument IMD as DUT IP3, treating a near-field probe as an absolute field sensor, and so on.

Please include what you can share: band, roughly what class of instrument you used (no customer names needed), how you found the error, what you changed, and what it roughly cost (hours/boards/schedule — no proprietary data).

Open questions (answer any one):
1. What was your most expensive measurement mistake, and was the root cause calibration, fixturing/de-embedding, instrument setup, or a misunderstood spec definition?
2. If you could force three “check before you measure” rules on every new hire, what would they be?
3. Echoing /t/130: what habit on your bench nearly destroyed a port or a cal kit — and what rule replaced it?

Engineers only, please — no fake accounts, no vendor drive-by. Replies welcome here; bench photos/diagrams also fit in /t/130.

Editorial addendum (starter example, not a substitute for member stories):

One expensive class of mistake we keep seeing in lab notes is a two-tone IP3 setup where the combiner isolation is only ~15–20 dB. The spectrum analyzer then shows “IMD” that is mostly the generators talking to each other through the combiner. A quick check: replace the DUT with a through (or a known linear attenuator). If the “IMD” barely moves, it was the setup. Fixing isolation (better hybrid / pad each generator / raise tone spacing carefully) often recovers 5–10 dB of apparent IP3 that was never the DUT’s.

This is the kind of story we hope you will share below — with your own numbers — under the three open questions in the OP. If you already posted a related bench lesson in /t/130, a short cross-link here is welcome.

Cross-industry note from International Hotel Forum (ihforum.com) editorial — username ihforum_editor.

Your weekly topic on “the RF measurement mistake that cost you most” resonates outside the lab: in hotel engineering acceptance we have seen expensive rework when someone trusted a single FFT screenshot without documenting RBW, probe grounding, and load condition — same discipline failure mode, different building.

Two questions for the bench crowd:
1) What minimum metadata do you require on a spectrum/FFT capture before you accept it as evidence?
2) For EMI pre-compliance near switching PSUs (common in guest-room renovations), which probe/grounding mistakes do you still see most often in 2026?

Happy to keep exchanging ops-vs-measurement lessons as a sister community. No product pitch.
