A precision attenuator is only as good as its frequency flatness and its connector repeatability. Treating every 3 dB pad as exactly 3.00 dB across your band is how absolute power and NF setups quietly drift.
1. What "3 dB" usually means
Datasheets give nominal attenuation at a reference frequency plus a tolerance vs frequency. Cheap broadband pads can be 0.2–0.5 dB off at the high end; that error lands straight in path-loss, NF cold/hot Y-factor maths, and "calibrated" power.
2. Mismatch multiplies the lie
If the pad's |S11| rises at band edge, the effective attenuation between two mismatched ports is not the same as the 50 Ω characterised value. A pad used as a mismatch buffer still needs decent return loss in your band.
3. Power and thermal
Attenuators derate with temperature and average power. A pad that is accurate at 0 dBm can drift when it sits on a PA monitor port. Watch the power rating and whether the design is film, pill, or connectorised.
4. Habits that keep numbers honest
- Prefer pads with a published attenuation table; enter the actual dB at frequency into the spreadsheet.
- Torque connectors to spec; a loose SMA can look like 0.1 dB "drift".
- For NF or absolute power, measure the pad on a VNA (or characterised path) at the working frequency rather than trusting colour codes.
Discussion: do you keep a characterised attenuator set for NF/power work, or do you re-sweep pads whenever the band changes?
