SMP and SMPM mating: torque is not the metric — float, misalignment, and cycle life

Board-to-board SMP/SMPM links fail more often from stackup and misalignment than from a missing torque number. Treating them like SMA torque problems burns cycle life and creates intermittent opens.

1. Float and tolerance
The connector family is designed for axial and radial float. If your mechanical stack consumes the entire float budget, every mate is a hard crash. Check PCB thickness, solder fillet height, and housing tolerance together.

2. Cycle life is conditional
Datasheet cycles assume specified misalignment and a clean interface. Side-load from a warped board or a cable that pulls at an angle can cut life by an order of magnitude. Separate "engineering mate" adapters from production interconnects.

3. Habit
- Design the stack for float first; RF length second
- Use connector savers on instruments; do not burn production SMPM on daily VNA work
- Log mate count on fixtures that see production sampling

Discussion: what misalignment budget (axial/radial) do you write into the mechanical ICD for SMP/SMPM, and have you measured intermittent opens vs temperature after partial mating?

SMP/SMPM want float budget in the ICD, not SMA-style torque culture. Side-load kills cycle life quietly.

Do you separate instrument savers from production board-to-board parts?
