Discone on the bench: skirt angle, feed gap, ground-plane myths, and when an LPDA is the wrong broadband pick

A discone looks like the “instant decade antenna” for monitoring, EMI sniffing, and wideband RX — until S11 walks with every mast clamp change and the pattern tips more than the brochure admits. A few habits that keep it honest.

**1. What the geometry is actually doing**

- Cone (or disk) + skirt set a **wideband monopole-like** transition: the feed region wants a smooth flare from a small gap into a skirt that looks like ~50 Ω over a wide band.
- Skirt length sets the **low-frequency** edge more than people expect; disk/cone diameter and feed gap set the **high-frequency** match and the onset of pattern breakup.
- Habit: treat “covers 100 MHz–1 GHz” as a **match claim** until you have looked at pattern or at least relative gain vs a known reference at the edges — match alone does not mean the pattern is still useful.

**2. Feed gap and balun / choke discipline**

- The coax outer on a discone is part of the radiator if you do not choke it. Symptoms: S11 changes when you grab the mast cable; nulls fill in; vertical polarisation purity dies.
- Keep the feed gap mechanical (spacer, bead, or vendor feed) stable — a 0.5 mm gap change at UHF is a different antenna.
- Clamp-on ferrites on the coax are a **sanity check**, not a substitute for a proper feed / choke at the disk. If ferrites still move S11 or the pattern, the feed is unfinished.

**3. “It needs a ground plane” — usually the wrong reflex**

- A classic discone is **not** a quarter-wave monopole over a big ground. Adding a random chassis plate under a skirted discone often **detunes** the low end and skews the pattern.
- What *does* matter: mast conductivity near the feed, nearby verticals, and whether the skirt can see a metal roof λ/4 away. Habit: freeze mast clamp position the same way you freeze boom position on a Yagi.

**4. When an LPDA (or a bicone) is the better tool**

- **LPDA:** you need modest **gain** and a more stable directive pattern across a decade (EMC TX/RX, site survey with direction). Discone is nearer **omni / low gain**.
- **Bicone / dual-cone:** you care about a cleaner wideband **dipole-like** pattern and can afford a symmetric feed.
- **Discone:** monitoring, scanner RX, “hear everything nearby,” and benches where boom length of an LPDA is the real problem. Do not pick discone because the VSWR plot looks flatter if you actually needed front-to-back.

**5. A short acceptance gate**

1. Match across the *use* band with the production mast clamp and feed cable dress.
2. Cable-grab / ferrite smoke test: if S11 or relative level moves >~1 dB, fix CM before publishing a “flat” claim.
3. Spot-check relative level at low-band edge, mid, and high-band edge against a known antenna or a prior dated trace at the same marked position — pattern breakup at the high end is common and invisible on S11 alone.
4. Log skirt length, disk diameter, feed-gap spec, and mast distance.

**Discussion**

On your last wideband monitoring or EMI-sniffer antenna, did you ship a discone or an LPDA — and when the high end “went deaf,” was it match, pattern breakup, or feed CM rather than the receiver?

Addendum: a discone is a wideband monopole-like flare; mast clamps, feed-gap changes, and “extra ground planes” walk S11 and tip the pattern more than brochure plots admit.

Keep expectations honest:
1. Fix skirt angle and feed gap; re-check S11 after every clamp/mast change.
2. Do not invent a large ground plane under a classic discone and expect the same match — geometry changed.
3. Pick LPDA when you need front-to-back and pattern control; pick discone when you need cheap decade RX/monitoring and can live with pattern tilt.

What span (e.g. 100–1000 MHz) and is this RX-only monitoring or also TX?
