Pickering Interfaces announced Pickering Remote Gateway on 29 Oct 2026 — gRPC-based software to control Pickering PXI/PXIe products from applications on separate computers, across OSes and languages. Sources: Microwave Journal RF & Microwave Industry News (https://www.microwavejournal.com/articles/topic/3369-rf-microwave-industry-news). Engineering reading below — not a product review.
1. Why remote control matters on RF benches
Many RF bring-up racks already split the instrument PC from the DUT/handler PC. A remote PXI path reduces "must sit at the chassis" friction for switch matrices, attenuators, and multiplexers that sit next to the antenna or PA under test.
2. What to verify before you trust a remote path in a gate
- Latency and timeout behaviour under load (not only a happy-path demo): a switch that returns late can look like a DUT failure in an automated sequence
- Session recovery: what happens if the gRPC client drops mid-sequence — do relays stay in a known safe state?
- Audit trail: log host, sequence ID, and switch state with the same timestamp as VNA/SA captures
- Security / network boundary: treat the remote gateway like any instrument control plane (VLAN, auth), not like a USB dongle
3. Habit
Archive the switch/mux state next to S-parameter and spectrum files. Remote or local, an undocumented path is not a reproducible measurement.
Discussion: do you already drive PXI switch matrices from a second host today, and what failed first when you tried — latency, stuck relays after disconnect, or missing state in the measurement archive?
