Above a few GHz, teams argue about DUT match while the connector family, mating cycles, and adapter stack set a large part of the residual. SMA, SMP, and SMPM fail in different, repeatable ways.
1. What the connector actually sets
- SMA: ubiquitous, but torque, pin depth, and adapter quality dominate repeatability past ~18 GHz; "good enough" adapters often are not
- SMP / SMPM: denser, blind-mate friendly; catch is axial misalignment, float, and when the PCB launch (not the bullet) is the real discontinuity
- Shared trap: mixing connector families through adapters piles VSWR and phase wander into every "DUT" plot
2. Freeze list for a fixture claim
- Connector family and mating style on both ends of the cable / launch you archive
- Torque or blind-mate engagement note, and cycle count if the fixture is shared
- Whether the cal kit / ECal family matches the DUT connector, or you are living with an adapter residual (name it)
- For SMP/SMPM: PCB launch design (anti-pad, back-drill, ground vias) on the same sheet as the connector PN
3. Habit
Never publish a match or phase number without connector family + adapter stack. Swapping SMA-to-2.92 adapters mid-campaign is a method change, not a cable swap.
Discussion: on your last fixture disagreement above 10 GHz, did the fix land in connector family, torque/engagement, or the PCB launch — and do you forbid mixed-adapter stacks on production travelers?
