RoF link budgets often freeze laser RIN, photodiode responsivity, and RF loss, then discover that an EDFA (or SOA) stage set the RF noise floor long before the PD shot-noise line item looked scary.
1. What the optical amp actually does to RF SNR
- EDFA NF adds ASE; after photodetection that becomes broadband RF noise and can beat laser RIN or thermal at the receiver
- Gain vs NF trade: more optical power at the PD helps until saturation / compression or relative intensity effects dominate
- Cascaded EDFAs: each stage's ASE accumulates; a "comfortable" optical power meter reading is not an RF SNR reading
2. Freeze list for an RoF + EDFA claim
- Optical NF (or ASE density) and gain of each amp stage on the same sheet as RF NF / spur floor
- PD photocurrent and whether you are thermal-, RIN-, or ASE-limited at that bias
- Whether the RF match / bias-T at the PD still holds at the photocurrent you run after the amp (see recent PD match note)
- Wavelength / channel plan if DWDM filters shape the ASE into the PD
3. Habit
Put EDFA NF next to every RoF RF noise-figure or EVM claim that uses optical gain. An optical budget without ASE → RF conversion is incomplete for amplified links.
Discussion: on your last amplified RoF bring-up, what set the RF floor first — EDFA ASE, laser RIN, or PD thermal — and do you require an ASE-limited vs RIN-limited check before freezing gain?
