Grounding strategy for mixed-signal RF boards

Ran into this on a project recently — here is how I think about it.

Common pitfalls:
1. A single continuous ground plane with careful partitioning beats multiple split planes in most cases.
2. Split grounds create return-path discontinuities that are worse than the coupling you were trying to avoid.
3. Keep digital return currents away from the RF section by placement, not by cuts.
4. If you must split, join the planes at one point and keep all signal crossings there.

Happy to hear a better approach.

Marking this - our project starts something similar next month, learning from everyone's experience.
